A National Survey of Asthma Specialist Perspectives on Physical Activity in Asthma

NHLBI guidelines recommend regular physical activity (PA) for patients with asthma. Healthcare provider (HCP) counseling represents an effective approach to optimizing patient activity. However, current exercise rates among asthma are sub-optimal, suggesting that may be improved. We aimed understand PA behaviors HCPs involved in management. A voluntary 15-item survey assessing providers’ self-reported awareness of recommendations and their clinical practices was sent 979 randomly selected HCP members the AAAAI. Data analyzed using SigmaPlot. The overall response rate 9.3% (91/979). Respondents were physicians (100%) Allergists/Immunologists (96%) who reported average 18.1±12.3 years independent practice. Average respondent age 50.6±11.8 old 50% male. Over half (58%) they personally engaged ≥150 minutes/week moderate strenuous PA. Eighty percent participants not aware specific asthma, yet 66% acknowledged evidence improved outcomes exercise. large majority respondents believed (97%) severe (84%) should pursue While 90% support incorporating into care, only 69% regularly counsel about our cohort recognized as important component care but often unaware guidelines.
